Presentation at March Meeting

March’s Meeting featured Kim Hodges and Jacob Rash from NC Wildlife updating us on some new developments on trout fishing in NC.  A slide show of their entire program can be viewed by clicking the highlighted section at the bottom of this page while a summary of key points is included below.

It was mentioned that the Delayed Harvest section of the Ararat River will be opened this October and consist of 2 miles of river in Mt Airy that will have access from a trail that will run along the river but will only have vehicle access at three points: Riverside, Roe, and Tharrington School parks so some walking will be required.  A map is included in the presentation.  It was also mentioned that there are 4 additional DH fisheries that will be added this fall.

It was also mentioned that trout fishing in NC is worth roughly $174 million per year in economic development and that 93,000 trout anglers spent $146 million on trips and equipment which is worth mentioning when we communicate with our elected representatives about supporting conservation related legislation.

Jan Meeting with Al Kittredge on the Smith River with Maps
Al Kittredge did a presentation on Trout fishing in the tail waters of Smith River for our January meeting which is roughly one hour north of Winston Salem.Al went over a history of the fishery which can be reviewed from his presentation on our website but the bottom line is that the involved parties have initiated some recent changes aimed at improving the fishery and based on comments at the meeting the quality of the Brown trout caught on the river improved slightly last year.  Al indicated that despite recent troubles the Smith does provide some good trout water with lots of fish but not a lot of big ones that is available all year since it is tail water fishing.  The Smith is a combination of Special regulation section and hatchery supported sections and your fishing license requirements depend on the section you are fishing.  If you go get a Va fishing license, check the generation schedule (276-629-2432), don’t even try to wade if they are generating and keep an eye on flows and get out when they start to rise.  The water is typically very clear and the trout are wary so carefully wading, long casts, long small diameter tippets, and small nymphs and soft hackles are most productive. The entire presentation along with Maps he provided and more detailed explanation of the sections and the license requirements can be viewed by clicking the highlighted text and going to the bottom of the page.  Al’s  email is aakitt@earthlink.net and his number is 910-868-6235.

Sept 2010 TU meeting Western NC fly Fishing Trail
Making Connections through TU
For those who missed our first meeting it was great!!!!!!!!!  We had 36 folks who attended, great food, and a lot of good connections taking place.
David introduced the new member leaders for this year and well as new members, Alexis Grove spoke about her experience at the fly fishing camp, Rusty and Sam updated us on recent TU regional meetings, and Alex Bell described the Fly Fishing trail that has been established in western NC.  Alex was very knowledgeable and helpful, and offered to take anyone who has had a recent tour of Afghanistan or Iraq on a free one day guided fishing trip.  He indicated that he didn’t mind helping folks who where coming to the area making connections…….. for instance he helped Sam make a connection on a shuttle service for a float trip he was planning on the Tuck.  So if you are headed out to Jackson county and need some information make the connection…….. his number is 828-226-3833 and his email is alex@abfish.org.
